Welcome to winter! In my part of the world, we’ve been getting a dusting of snow nearly every day. I love it.

The fine folks at Wisconsin Sea Grant have developed four hands-on and standards-based lessons to use with Saving Our Sturgeon.

They’ve also created a truly incredible storymap for the book. If you’re not familiar, a story map “uses ArcGIS, an online geographic information system (GIS). GIS is a modern way to make & share maps and a StoryMap turns these maps into an interactive experience for learning.” It’s so cool and really makes the places and people of Saving Our Sturgeon come alive.

SoS Book Shopping
My niece told me that she found Saving Our Sturgeon in her local Barnes & Noble in Appleton. It’s not easy getting a book selected by B&N, so I jumped online and saw that all Wisconsin B&N stores are stocking it. Yay!
If you prefer smaller businesses, it’s also available at Beaver Creek Reserve, The Local Store, Redbery Books, Honest Dog Books, and Northwind Book & Fiber.
Also, fun to see that Saving Our Sturgeon was included in Dan Small’s Wisconsin Outdoor News “Must-Have Reads for the Outdoor Enthusiast.”
Wisconsin Sturgeon News
The Winnebago System sturgeon spearing season will be upon us in February - February 14, to be exact. If you are not a spearer, this is still an event that is worth seeing. It’s free to swing by to one of the registration spots to watch the catch get scanned and measured. (If you’re not a fisher or spearer, yes, it’s a little gruesome. But take heart - this harvest is a key way that lake sturgeon are managed so well in Wisconsin.)
Also recommended: heading to a local tavern afterwards for refreshments.
